What to get a mother-in-law you don't know well

Your partner is your best guide. How to choose a thoughtful gift while you’re still getting to know her.

Ask your partner. They know what she enjoys, what she already has, and what might feel like too much, and a gift you choose together takes the pressure off you.

Beyond that, something good-quality and easy to enjoy is a safe choice: a treat she likes, flowers, or something for a hobby she’s mentioned.

What to ask your partner

A few questions help. What does she enjoy doing? Has she mentioned wanting anything? Is there anything she doesn’t like, or wouldn’t use?

It’s also worth asking whether gifts usually come from the couple or from each of you. In many families a joint gift is the norm.

Ideas that tend to be welcome

Something for a hobby
Gardening, cooking, reading, crafts. A small, good-quality item for something she already loves shows you’ve been paying attention.
A treat she enjoys
Her favorite chocolates or tea, or something from a bakery she likes.
Photos of the family
A print from a recent visit is often treasured, especially if there are grandchildren.
Time together
Lunch out or a class you do together can help you get to know each other, if she’d enjoy that.

What to be careful with

Things for her home, like decor or kitchenware, unless your partner is confident about her taste.

Anything that could hint at self-improvement — self-help books, fitness gear, skincare — unless she’s asked for it.

Very expensive gifts. Something thoughtful and modest is easier to receive.

It gets easier

Every visit tells you a little more. Noting what she mentions — a favorite author, a plant she’s after for the garden — gives you ideas for next time.
