What to do when someone else bought the same gift
Found out someone else is giving the same thing? How to sort it out before the day, and what to do if both have already been opened.
If you find out before the gift is given, a quick word with the other person settles it: decide who keeps theirs, and the other returns or exchanges. It’s a common mix-up and easy to fix.
If both have already been opened, keep it light. The recipient can return one, and there’s no need to make a big deal of it.
If you find out beforehand
- Talk to the other giver
- A quick message sorts it out. Whoever finds it easier to return or exchange can swap theirs.
- Keep your receipt
- It makes an exchange simple. Many shops will give you a gift receipt too.
- Give it together
- If it’s a pricier item you both wanted to give, you could give it jointly and split the cost.
If it’s already been opened
It happens, and a light touch makes it easy. If you’re one of the givers, “Great minds think alike — feel free to exchange mine” takes the awkwardness away.
If you’re the one receiving, you don’t need to say which one you’ll return. A quiet exchange later is fine.
Avoiding it next time
A shared wishlist or registry where givers can mark what they’ve bought prevents most duplicates. So does a quick message to family before a big occasion to check who’s getting what.
