What to do when you forgot someone's birthday

A quick, honest message and a small follow-up usually set it right. What to say, what to send, and how to keep it from happening again.

Send a message today. A short, honest note — “I missed your birthday, and I’m sorry. I hope it was a good one” — does more than waiting until you’ve found the right gift.

A late wish is far better than none, and a simple apology usually goes a long way.

What to say

Keep it short and skip the long explanation. A brief apology, a real wish for their year ahead, and maybe something you appreciate about them is plenty.

If you’d normally call, call. Hearing your voice can mean more than a text.

Whether to send a gift

If you usually give them something, a belated gift is a nice follow-up. It doesn’t need to be bigger to make up for the delay; the same size you’d have chosen on time is right.

Something you can send quickly
A delivery from a bakery or florist near them, or a digital gift card to a place they love, with a note.
A belated celebration
Taking them out for coffee or dinner turns the missed day into a second one.
Something they mentioned
If you remember something they’ve wanted, a late gift that shows you were listening is a good way to make up for it.

What to avoid

Overdoing the apology. A long explanation or a much bigger gift can leave them reassuring you.

Letting it slide until next year. The longer it goes, the harder it is to mention.

Keeping it from happening again

Put birthdays somewhere you’ll see them in advance. A reminder a week or two ahead, not just on the day, gives you time to plan.
